Stuart Cooper – Hand Turned Spalted Beech Bowls

Each of these beautiful bowls is individually hand turned by Stuart Cooper, showcasing the natural character and story of the wood itself. Crafted from spalted beech sourced from salvaged timber in Kilbroney Forest, no two pieces are ever the same.

What does “spalted” mean?
Spalting is a natural process that occurs when wood begins to be colonised by fungi. Rather than damaging the wood, this early stage of decay creates stunning, organic patterns—dark lines, streaks, and contrasting tones that look almost like ink drawings within the grain. These markings are completely unique and cannot be replicated, making every bowl a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Sustainably sourced
The beech used in these bowls has been rescued from fallen or felled trees in Kilbroney Forest, giving new life to wood that might otherwise go to waste. It’s a lovely example of craftsmanship meeting sustainability.

Why they’re special:

  • Hand turned by a skilled local maker
  • Made from reclaimed, locally sourced timber
  • Naturally patterned through spalting – no artificial finishes
  • Functional and decorative – perfect for serving or display

A truly special addition to any home, celebrating nature, craftsmanship, and the beauty of imperfection 🌿
