Beginner Sewing Machine Course for May
This 4-week beginner sewing course, brought to you by our Happy Pearl Craftshop team, is perfect for anyone who is new to sewing or would like to build confidence using their machine. Each week introduces new skills through practical, achievable projects, helping you progress step by step while creating beautiful handmade items to take home.
Week 1 – Sewing Machine Basics & Drawstring Pouch
In our first class, we’ll focus on getting comfortable with the sewing machine.
You’ll learn how to set up and prepare the machine for sewing, practice basic stitches, and understand seam allowances.
By the end of the class, you’ll complete an easy, beginner-friendly drawstring pouch and gain the confidence to start sewing.
Week 2 – Zipper Pouch
In the second class, we’ll introduce zippers — an essential skill for many future projects.
You’ll learn how to sew a zip step by step and create a simple flat zipper pouch.
This class will give you the confidence to add zippers to many other sewing projects.
Week 3 – Quilted Padded Placemat
In this class, we’ll slow things down and focus on sewing confidently in straight lines.
You’ll learn how to layer fabric with padding and practice basic quilting techniques while making a quilted padded placemat.
This project helps improve accuracy and control, preparing you for more structured sewing.
Week 4 – Quilted Box Bag
In our final class, we’ll bring everything together.
Using the skills learned in the previous weeks — straight stitching, zippers, quilting, and accuracy — you’ll complete a quilted box bag.
This project looks impressive but is fully achievable, even for beginners.
By the End of the CourseYou’ll be able to:
Use a sewing machine with confidence
Sew straight seams accurately
Insert zippers
Work with padding and quilting
Create structured, practical handmade items
And you’ll take home four finished projects you’ll be proud of.

When: Tuesday 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th May
Time: 7 - 9pm
Where: Blackrock Community Centre, Sandy Lance, in the Board Room
Cost: €110 includes materials used. If possible bring your own working sewing machine. A couple of machines will be available for use for those who don't have one.
Booking is essential either by prepaying for the course online or by paying a deposit of €30 in the shop and the balance on the commencement of the course.
Please note deposits are non-refundable unless a replacement is found. In the event of our cancelling all payments will be refunded.
A minimum number of 4 participants is required for the course to proceed. Maximum number is 6.
